Connection & Data transfer methods

Connection
How can I pair my LivePen for the first time with my mobile?
The LivePen connects via Bluetooth with your mobile. Once you remove the pen cap, the pen will automatically start to look for your mobile device. The pen LED indicator will start blinking blue while it looks for a device nearby to pair with. Please follow the prompts in the LivePen app to complete the pairing process.
Handwritten notes can also be live streamed to the device using an active Bluetooth connection.
How do I pair my LivePen with a different device?
Make sure you've disconnected your LivePen from the first device. Then, you will need to put the LivePen back in pairing mode and do one of the following steps:
- Method 1: Tap on the "Device Pairing" smartpaper icon on any Livescribe notebook with the tip of your pen to enable pairing mode. The pen LED will start blinking blue
- Method 2: Press down and hold the pen for 3 seconds on any Non-Livescribe paper or on any surface to enable pairing mode. The pen LED will start blinking blue
Once the pen is blinking blue, open the LivePen app in your new device and follow the prompts to complete the pairing process.
Do I have to pair my LivePen every time I start writing?
No, the LivePen needs to be paired only for the first time with any device that you use it with. The pen remembers the device and connects automatically.
Do I need an active Bluetooth connection to record audio while taking notes?
Yes, but this feature is currently unavailable on the LivePen app. We will let you know once this feature becomes available.
02
Managing multiple Bluetooth Connections
How many Bluetooth devices can my smartpen remember and connect automatically to?
The LivePen will store up to 3 devices but can only connect to the Livepen App on one device at a time. The smartpen will always try to connect with the most recent device it was used with. If the most recent device is not available for Bluetooth connection, the smartpen will then automatically try to connect with its two other known devices that it was previously connected with.
What will happen if I pair my smartpen with a fourth device?
If you are trying to pair a fourth device, the smartpen will automatically remove the oldest device from its list and will remember the 3 most recent devices.
03
Syncing and Data Transfer
Will the pen capture data on its own?
Yes, the LivePen has an on-board flash memory and can store up to 20 A5 pages worth of notes in its memory before it gets full. As long as your LivePen has sufficient battery life, it can capture anything that you write on Livescribe notebooks.
If the pen battery falls below 5%, it will go into sleep mode and will not capture any data. The pen needs to be charged before it can be used again for data capture.
Do I need to always turn my LivePen app ON to capture my handwriting?
No, you do not need to turn on the LivePen app all the time. If you do turn on the LivePen app while you use your LivePen, you will see real-time streaming of your handwriting appear and the pen will not store data its memory.
How can I transfer data from my smartpen to the LivePen App on my device?
As soon as your LivePen connects with the LivePen App, it automatically starts syncing all the data from the pen to the LivePen App. Depending on the amount of data to be transferred, the data transfer time varies.
I use my smartpen with multiple devices. How do I transfer data between my devices
The data stored in the pen is automatically synced with your most recently connected device. Using your smartpen is the only way to transfer your handwritten notes to all your devices. There is no other way to sync data between your different devices.
